Bass tuner conversion bushings

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got an absolutely killer deal on a birdseye maple Warmoth 5 string neck ($70.00 shipped) and I have a set of tuning keys in my parts drawer but the holes drilled for the tuners in the neck are bigger than the tuners I have. Is there a conversion bushing that can be placed in the larger hole to allow tuners with smaller shafts to be used? I recall seeing these at some time but I have not been able to find anything and I like the tuners in my drawer.

im sure you can get them, i have never seen them, but you could probably have some milled if you really really wanted to use your tuners

Hey Man

I'm dealing with the same issue and though I have no idea whether my idea will work well, here's what I came up with.

9/16" I.D. x 11/16" O.D. Leaf Spring Bushing
Inside Diameter: 9/16"
Outside Diameter: 11/16"
Length: 1-3/4"
Finish: Nylon

I haven't received them just yet so I don't know how they'll work. Also, to tell the truth, I'm putting together a real piece of crap, but I dthought I'd toss the idea to you anyway.

Thanks, that just might work. Let me know how it works once you get them.

Why not just glue in a dowel and drill it out to the correct diameter hole? Hm. That sounded pompous. OK, take that as a suggestion that I hope helps. On a project bass I'm building I drilled one of the tuner holes with too large of a bit. I have to do this myself...

This was going to be my last resort if I could not find a conversion bushing. It is more than likely what I will end up doing.

This is one manufacturer of brass bearings. They are standard items that you can get them through a local industrial bearing supplier in all sizes. You would want either the cast (not sintered) bronze ones, or for lighter weight, polymer ones. The "leaf spring bushing" mentioned above is likely one of these.

If 11/16 OD x 9/16 ID by 1/2 long is the right size, the closest mcmaster-carr carries is # 6381K474, which is 1/2 ID and so would have to be drilled out a bit.

Mcmaster also has tubing, 11/16OD x 9/16 ID, teflon, which would be easy to cut to length, for only $11 a foot. # 5033K38 .

I just dealt with the same problem on my new Allparts neck. Just took wood dowel stock, sanded to the required size, then marked and cut the plugs to length. A little Titebond and I was ready to drill the new holes the next day. Worked like a charm and the original tuner bushings completely cover the repair. I defy anyone to notice it wasn't stock, unless they read this, of course!

Thanks for the responses. I think I am going to dowl and redrill the holes. It just looks like the best way to go at this point.

Well, it didn't work! First of all, the machines I ordered--(1) Wilkinson bass-side(right hand) sealed bass tuner. Black finish. 17:1 ratio. Permanently lubricated. Requires 9/16"(14mm) peghead hole.---are too small for the I.D. of these bushings.

Secondly, these same bushings are slightly too small for the holes in the SX neck I was going to use. They're slightly too large for another SX neck I have; although the holes on this one are finished inside, so that would change the outcome.

So, I guess I'll need to convince another to dowel and redrill the headstock on the neck I wish to use.
