Best way to take off a neck....

Sign in to disble this ad
The bolts appear to have been broken off or something...all 4 of them. I can post a pic if it will help...I will have to take it tonight.

Any ideas?

Edit: Neck is bolt on obviously....4 bolts...6 string neck....not sure if that matters.

I will get one up as soon as I get home. I have no idea how all 4 of them could have been broken but maybe I am missing something.

pics up in a few hours!

Maybe I've misunderstood, but if they're all broken shouldn't the neck come right off?

Ok, what do you guys think? I am having to scrape all of the paint off with a screwdriver too....which is a tedious process.

Here is a pic.

Uhm these seem pretty screwed up (no pun intended). However this summer I used a couple of times a set of drill bits that are meant to dig in metal rotating counter-clockwise, to grab in stripped screws and allow to unscrew them with minimal damage to the surroundings. I think they're just called screw extractors. The tiniest one might be able to dig in the shaft.

Or maybe I just don't know these screws.

It looks like the body has inserts, you could drill out the old screws and inserts and replace with new hardware.

Yeah, I was thinking I would have to drill in them somehow and extract them....aaarghhh...not an easy task. Plus I don't want to mess the neck up.

Screw extractors is what you need. Take the whole hunk into a good hardware store & they should be able to hook you up.

Cool, thanks. I would put it out of it's misery but I just got it as a project and the wood looks very nice after sanding and scraping paint off.

Those are the exact ones I used. You might need to drill a little the shaft for the screw extractor to bite in properly, due to the flat end.

So just use one of the drill bits supplied, drill down the middle, and then use the extractor? Hopefully this will be easier than I am thinking...but I doubt it will be...haha.

Seriously, the screw extractors should do the trick. Good luck.

Thanks for the um....motivation? ;-)

Should I do this with a drill press? My dad has one. Man this is turning into a pain in my bass.

I dont think it's inserts what it looks like to me is somebody broke off the entire neck plate which on turn broke off the tops of the screws and left the broken pieces of whats left of the plate in the holes...
Screw extractors....
