Black line between body core and top?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I want to put a black line between the body core and top of a bass. What to use?
Inspired by this Ristola bass:

He says "black veneer."
Good to know, not quite enough info.

What say you folk?
Does 1/8" ebony veneer in sheets that large (half body width) even exist?
Is it something else, like dyed maple?

Anyone have a source for this stuff?

thanks!

From my understanding, dyed Holly or Maple is whats usually used in those instances.

Ditto on the wenge. I was using black dyed maple from LMI for a long time but the sheets are expensive and narrow. I bought a big lot of wenge veneer on ebay and haven't looked back.

like Wilser, I've had good success with Wenge veneer. I've also had good success with Black Walnut veneer as well.

I purchased the Wenge from an eBay seller in Vancouver, WA for an extremely reasonable price. I'll have to look to see what the name was

For the Walnut, I wanted something a little thicker so I made it myself from a 8/4 rough board I purchased at a local lumber yard. If I was to do it again, I would utilize a 3/4" re-saw blade on my bandsaw (didn't have one at the time) so as not to waste so much wood due to the wavy cut from a blade designed for other purposes

all the best,

R

is the wenge fairly black? I think of it as being a reddish brown...

Its dark dark brown, but with a finish on it, it will look pretty much black as a veneer. The inbetween grain is a little lighter, but it all comes out pretty dark after a finish.

Some example shots:

mine dried out darker than Macassar Ebony once the Titebond got ahold of it.

no red hues in any of the Wenge I've worked with before ... just lots of splinters waiting to live under your skin

all the best,

R

Hah, nice.
Thanks guys, appreciate all the input.

I've been making plans forever now, doing all my research, etc., but now that I'm getting down to the nitty-gritty of purchasing materials I'm discovering gaps in my planning.

I'm interested in this too....are there any special application requirements, like using a vacuum press?

How easy is it to match-up narrow sheets to cover an entire body width without gaps?

For a true deep black, you might want to use ebonized maple, or Gaboon ebony veneer.

I've been using black dyed veneer from this evilbay seller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/BLACK-DYED-ANIGR...QQcmdZViewItem

The sheets are plenty long enough for several basses, and plenty wide enough. He also sells some good dyed purple veneer that I buy. He packs and ships very well too.

I was a little concerned that since it was 'dyed', the color might fade with sanding or wiping of spirits, etc., but I've had very good results with it so far.

I have used walnut, and after glue and oil it came out pretty dark.

Try Wood River Veneer.....I have used their dyed veneers with great success. The black Costello Boxwood comes in .6 and .8mm thickness.
