Question Bloodwood?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, i found this on Ed Roman guitars site.
"Bloodwood has been asked for by some of the people in the Goth Community for obvious reasons.
Personally it does nothing for me as a tonewood or even a cosmetic wood.
It is a dull bland purplish red and has very little character.
Ed"

Kinda curious as to what other Luthiers think of this?
thanks
-James

To each his (or her) own. I don't agree with his assessment of its tonal qualities.

The comment was made by ed roman. It is a great looking wood, but I have never heard it, so I can't give comments on how it sounds.

I turn pens from it, and it is beautiful for that. It can be rather plainish in its figure. But the color of the bloodwood I use is a pretty bright red - nothing dull about it at all.
As far as a bass/guitar body though, I don't know. For me, there's not enough figure to make it interesting. I'd probably opt for a more figured wood and then stain it to my color choice.

Ive built 2 fretless' fingerboards from it, its pretty good stuff. Very dense, does not lose its color like others and for what its worth Ed Romans a shmuck in my book. Sorry thats just how I feel.

I really dig it as a neck wood when paired with an ebony board.

It won't compare with spalted leprous miasmawood (I just invented that) for wild figure, but I'm in the "glaring at lumber" design phase with it and I think I see a bloodwood top and fingerboard 5 string with ebony bits taking shape. The board I'm glaring at doesn't look dull- it's a nice red. Of course, this romance is young and I'm still infatuated.

Ed has his opinion on all woods and you can take em or leave em. Yes, wild variegation and/or curl or row figure is not at all common. Yes bloodwood is as vibrant a red wood as there is and it retains its color much better than padauk and chac te kok. It has a good janka and stiffness and can be used anywhere in the neck you see fit.

So if you like/need a red element in your bass, by all means use it. I have used it many times as neck laminates.

Basschair, those are beautiful!

My main bass has an alder body and a bloodwood top. It looks and sounds great, and gets lots of compliments.

Me either I have never seen or heard of Bloodwood looking like that. I even like the way it smells when working it. Sort of like pineapple.....t

Flame figured spalted bloodwood. I never doubted what it was, but the un-mistakeable smell when I started cutting certainly proved it!
