bloodwood fretless fingerboard

Sign in to disble this ad
I just completed my first bass build. I have a bloodwood fretless board and I would like to know of anyone having experience with this wood for this purpose. As far string wear.I would like to use rounds for brightness. I would prefer not to put a coating like epoxy on it. If anything some sort of oil that will give it more resistence to abrasive strings. Thanks in advance and I will post pics of bass as soon as I find batteries for my camera.

I have nothing to say, but I know that most of Tom Clement's basses have Bloodwood boards.

You can get bloodwood to a shine with sanding and buffing. It's an amazing wood, looks great and sent me to the hospital!

I've seen it used for hardwood flooring if that gives you an idea on strength. I've also used it as a top to one of my basses. Very very very tough stuff. The thing felt like it was sanded at 1000 grit after the planer. Takes a very nice shine but it is hard on the tools. Should make a nice fingerboard that will last a long time.

I'm guessing Mikey was being a bit sarcastic . Tung or walnut oil will help protect it, but it is really more about how agressive you play as to the durability and duration between touch ups

And how does a bloodwood fretboard sound on a fretless; like ebony(articulate)?

I found a great piece of bloodwood at the local Woodcraft not too long ago. Had some lovely sapwood with a bit of spalt in it. It looked really good until I came along with my learning curve and it went into the trash.

I'll do better next time. I promise.

Try BIRCHWOOD CASEY Tru Oil gun stock oil. I use it on my fret less. I got it for my MM neck ( they use it in the factory) and I read a Bass Player article by Rick Turner and he recommended it for bare wood finger boards. It is a very hard finish that is reversible.
