I just completed my first bass build. I have a bloodwood fretless board and I would like to know of anyone having experience with this wood for this purpose. As far string wear.I would like to use rounds for brightness. I would prefer not to put a coating like epoxy on it. If anything some sort of oil that will give it more resistence to abrasive strings. Thanks in advance and I will post pics of bass as soon as I find batteries for my camera.

| | | | You can get bloodwood to a shine with sanding and buffing. It's an amazing wood, looks great and sent me to the hospital! |

The thing felt like it was sanded at 1000 grit after the planer. Takes a very nice shine but it is hard on the tools. Should make a nice fingerboard that will last a long time. |

Tung or walnut oil will help protect it, but it is really more about how agressive you play as to the durability and duration between touch ups |

Had some lovely sapwood with a bit of spalt in it. It looked really good until I came along with my learning curve and it went into the trash.
I'll do better next time. I promise. |

I got it for my MM neck ( they use it in the factory) and I read a Bass Player article by Rick Turner and he recommended it for bare wood finger boards. It is a very hard finish that is reversible. http://www.basspro.com/Birchwood-Cas.../47259/-277061
