is this body cut stable for a bass?

you dont see many guitars cut like this, and ive never seen a bass cut this way. do you think the gap between the neck joint and the rest of the body would work for a bass?

Doesn't look like a sound idea to me. Having the neck supported only by one side makes it seemingly more likely to twist under string tension. Looks sorta neat though.

i'm guessing the same point behind fender body styles and singlecuts.

And to the OP, i remember reading somewhere that that cut was an accident when they were making a prototype. It doesn't really accomplish anything other than looking sweet.

Who would "they" be? That thing looks terrible! Not just that cut but the whole shaping of the body.

It doesn't seem like a very good idea if you ask me, especially for a bass.

The point of the Fender body style is so well-documented that if you really don't know, I'll leave it at that.
The general reasoning behind SCs(that I hear)is increased stability, body coupling & sustain; while I own a singlecut bass, I can't argue for any huge improvements in any of these areas- it's pretty much aesthetics for me.

Accident sounds pretty plausible...
Lastly, one man's 'sweet' is this man's 'what were they thinking(or smoking)?'

A bass neck has higher tension than a guitar, so I'd say no.

I am not a big fan of that shape. Does not seem to be very stable.

Just so everyone's aware, the guitar in question is likely an Alvarez Dana, circa 1993.

It may not be genuine though. The upper horn looks oddly shaped for an early 90's Alvarez. The flattened lower bouts (by the endpin) and the "scoop" are Alvarez's design.

Geez I hope that's not a genuine Alvarez... I'd have a hard time believing that. When I said the shaping of the body was terrible, I didn't mean I don't like the shape, I meant the actual shaping of the body was done very poorly. The lines are terrible, bumpy all over.

Maybe I'm just being too picky. It's what I'm used to.

Ray, I tend to agree with you about the shaping and carving. Awfully rough.

I swear I've seen those inlays on an Alvarez neck before. But then again, maybe the neck was transplanted. Anyhow, I'm almost positive that the body is non-original. I don't think the hump by the end of the fretboard should be there.

here's a link. Alvarez Dana

Back OT, to the OP. If you like the design, I say run with it. If you're looking for great high fret access, there are better (i.e more stable) designs that will allow you full access to every fret.

Looks like the one in the picture may be a *copy* of the Alvarez, as the edges look pretty sloppy around the neck pocket...

It should work fine. It might sound a little different, due to flexibility of the part where the neck attaches, but assuming the wood is strong, I wouldn't expect a problem.

i used to have one of the alvarez's with that strange cut away. made an interesting hand hold for walking around with the guitar but aside from that it was useless. Too bad alvarez electrics aren't the same quality as thier acoustics
