Body Size Question

Sign in to disble this ad
So I just finished drawing out the full size top-down view of my bass, but I'm curious about depth of the body. I'm looking to make it rather lightweight so I was thinking of going really low depth, like around 1". This is my first build, so I don't really know if I can get it that low, but I know that my Fender Jazz body is definately too thick for my tastes.

The specs for what I'm doing are:
4-string
32" scale
21 Lined Fretless
Walnut body
Maple neck w/ Walnut stringers on the outer sides
Pau Ferro fingerboard/nut/bridge/transition block
Single EMG35DC w/ BQS system in MM position

I'm going to do a cheap build first using poplar, maple, and cedar from my local home depot so I can make the majority of mess-ups that accompany a first build on $50 worth of wood before I spend a lot more on good wood.

Ideally I would like to stay under 1 1/2" for the thickness. So what are some body depths that you all use in your builds?

I did 1 3/8" on one bass and 1 5/8" on two others. 1" is possible depending on the preamp, pups and bla bla bla. pland carefully before doing so.

The first bass I built had a 1.25" body. It was ok, but neck heavy. I think you can get most preamps in there and the pickups only need about a 3/4" min depth, so it should all be ok.

If you want a slim body don't even think about push/pull pots.

Thanks for the information guys! I'm thinking 1 3/8" to counteract the neck dive yet keep it thin. I'll do the neck first and adjust the body accordingly after weighing it all out I suppose. Thanks again!

you can definitly make a body 1 1/4. what you want to do is keep the bottom line real long so the bass balances.
