Body wood?

Does this look like alder, ash, or basswood?

It's a late '70s/early '80s Tokai jazz body that weights 6 lbs. (fully loaded; no neck).

Looks sort of like ash, but it's hard to tell exactly.

Yeah... it looks a lot like ash, but it is hard to tell on a piece of wood that small that is partially covered with paint...

If it's a Japanese knock-off, it doesn't even have to be one of those woods, does it?

Looks too red to be ash. My guess would be alder.

The grain and colour yells "conifer" to me.
Agathis is pretty common in Japanese gear, and is a type of pine. Actually, having seen only the wood, knowing naught about the use, I'd have said "pine".

Yea, I'd have to agree. When i saw the pic. even before I scrolled down to your comment, I said to myself "that looks more like FIR to me more than it does Ash, Basswood or Alder!" Pine or some kind of Asian "Doug Fir" like wood for sure.

I agree that it looks like pine, but that wasn't one of the choices. My initial thought was that it looked like 2x4.
