bought a new book today...

We have a running joke in the guitar amp repair business and that is we love these "fix your own amp" books because they net us a lot of business, due to owners getting into their amps to repair them and find out that they are in over their heads or they zorch something due to not understanding what they are doing...

Be that as it may, I jumped firmly into the other camp today. I bought Dan Erlewine's book "Guitar Player Repair Guide, 3rd Edition"...

I have been doing my own setups, wiring, swapping of p'ups, bridges, etc, etc on my guitars and basses for years but have always wanted to learn to do more involved repairs such as fret leveling/replacement and doing some repairs on my acoustic guitars such as replacing a bridge (I have one right now that needs a needs a new bridge due to the fact it split across the string holes)...

I will practice on cheap instruments first...actually may buy an SX bass to do my experiments on...

My ultimate goal is to build my own, from scratch, bass in the year or so but before I can do that I need to learn how to install frets, learn to use a router, etc...fortunately I have several very good friends that are luthiers that I can call if I get in over my head.

Looking forward to reading this book while I am on vacation this coming week.

Any other suggestions for books will be appreciated.

From the FAQ in the stickies in this forum:

Books:

Building Electric Guitars: How to Make Solid-Body, Hollow-Body and Semi-Acoustic Electric Guitars and Bass Guitars
by Martin Koch
Martin Koch's website
http://www.buildyourguitar.com/resources/index.htm

Make Your Own Electric Guitar
by Melvyn Hiscock

To a lesser extent (though I found it useful):

Make Your Own Electric Guitar & Bass
by Dennis Waring, David Raymond
