DEcisions decisions. Coat it with floor grade gloss poly? CA? Epoxy?
Tung Oil? Tru Oil. I want gloss, want it to stand up to round wounds. I want low tech too. Floor grade poly has held up pretty well on my other boards. I'd like to try something else.
Suggestions?

| | Supporting Member Owner/Builder: Regenerate Guitar Works | | Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Upper Left Corner (Seattle) | | | Woodcraft carries the System3 line. I recently did a lined fretless conversion on a bound/blocked neck using System3's Mirror Coat product. With careful measuring and mixing, it's fairly easy to apply and level after it cures.
As for the CA approach ... I've tried it ... tried to like it ... and won't do it again. Too much of a mess - but my eyes simply could not bear the fumes, even with decent ventilation. Let's just say that I'd rather chop yellow onions in a small and tightly confined space than do another fingerboard with CA. YMMV of course, as several here prefer this over the epoxy method
all the best,

Oils won't work because I want the option to use roundwounds on a fretless. Oils just cant afford the protection I need.
I could be wrong....

Thx for the feedback

I usually just used it to glue CF rods in the neck, and to glue the composite fingerboards on. I figured, what the heck...
I wouldn't finish anything with CA... PITA! I think Dan was around too much CA fumes! (just kidding.. Dan is a talented guy) |

We use CA for gluing on binding, and I'm reminded of the hour it took to unglue my partner's fingers from a guitar once!
It's great to use for touch ups, but I'd hate to do a entire fingerboard in it. I use it when I'm installing frets too. It has its uses. I just don't see using it as a finish.
I don't think it's any tougher than acrylic lacquer either. I used polyurethane on a maple fingerboard fretless conversion once, and that held up real well using GHS Boomers. |
