Bridge pickup placement

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Fender Bronco Bass that I have modded and customized. It now has new american made electronics, lipstick pickup, new hipshot tuners, and a Musicmaster through the body 4 saddle bridge. I have the bass well set up, and really dialed in as far as playability is concerned.

I now want to increase the tonal capabilites of the bass by adding a second pickup in the bridge position. I have searched all over the internet, and really have not found anywhere that really tells me how to determine exactly where the bridge pickup should be placed.

This bass is a 30" scale, so measuring a jazz bass won't work.

Can anyone assist?

Thanks,
Fred

You can always take the pup, hook it up, place it over the strings and move it back and forward to find the spot you like. There is no right or wrong place to put a pickup, it's just what you like.

I've built a bass from rough lumber club #2 (I'm pretty sure).

on a 30" scale, I would place the center of the pick-up center 2 1/8" off the bridge( saddle closest to the nut) This would give you something very close to a Jazz bridge sound, just a touch brighter, and if you are using heavier gauge strings, this will be very similar to a Jazz sound at the bridge. Just my opinion

^^^+1 John's advice is probably best to find exactly the sound you want.
