Bridge question, need help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
I am working on placing an order for my new bolt-on bass.
One of the manufacture, hi-end, strongly not recommend me to upgrade the bridge from AMB barrel (this is as standard) to AMB 3 ways as it will eliminate some of the high-end sound.
I am very skeptical with this note and would like to hear from you guys if this could be the case.
Thanks or your time.

hi Charlie

sorry I have nothing to respond with, as I have not used an ABM bridge before ... lots of Hipshots and Leo Quans, but no ABMs

all the best,

changing the bridge type and/or material will change a nuance to the overall flavor of a bass, sure. will it have the same amount of impact as changing from a single-coil type p/u to a split-coil, or changing from passive to active ... nothing quite that dramatic IMO

even if you were to lose some of the highs, this might not be a bad thing in the overall scheme of a band mix. a lot would also depend on your playing style and the music style. what I mean is that a loss of highs will have no impact on a blues player who uses flatwounds and rolls the tone completely off ... but it might have a negative impact on someone who spends the entire night playing with the treble maxed on their pre-amp to put the slaps/pops right between your eyes

I know this isn't a black/white type answer, sorry. there are so many factors that, when combined in the right collection, make for a great bass. an Ash bodied bass with a bridge that has less highs might be a good combination, and the same configuration on a Mahogany bodied bass would be completely lifeless.

make sense?

all the best,

R

I myself am very skeptical as I use the modern 3-way bridges on all my custom orders and do not notice them lacking hi end in any way.

I use the barrel-style bridges on some of my prototypes and they are clear and full sounding as well.

I have done this switch before on a bass for one of my customers. Jack said he has noticed very little difference between the two as far as the treble tones of his instrument. The only thing he noticed was a bit more sustain. Just wanted to relay this along

I think I found the reason for that though the maker didn't say so.
When I look closely to their basses, both Bo and Neckthrough, the NT is 24 frets and BO is 22 frets and I don't know why their BO 22 frets has a saddle's position a bit further back than the NT 24 frets and this why they can't fit the AMB 3 ways on the BO 22 frets since it is bigger than the barrel that will fall of bass's body contour.
Both type has the same body scale and both are 34" and I don't know why it made this different.
Thanks for your thought.

(The are Pedulla Thunderbolt and Thunderbass that I refering too)
