The building of my pine-bodied Double Neck.

Sign in to disble this ad
Let me start by saying that Pine is God's gift to Canadians.
Let my second thing said be that this is a really stupid idea, since I'm in way over my head.

Essentially, I traced a jazz bass twice (three inches apart from one another) and made the important modifications which you will see in time.

keeping the electronics extremely simple.

Did I mention I'm going 4080? Top = 4 string bass, bottom = 6 string guitar.

Should be a piece of crap, but a lot of fun, like I try to do.

Today I rough-cut the body with my great grandfather's 4-foot-long bucksaw. That's right. tomorrow I will clean up on spindle sander, as always, and round-over.

pictures tomorrow.

A positive attitude is the foundation of success. Anything else will bring failure.

is is, essentially, just two bodies.

Mikey, I am easily mis-understood, hah. self-deprecation is a constant with me, not from a negative attitude or lack of self-confidence, it's just how I get on with a lot of things. silly, I know - but I am only a child.

Amen! If you set low expectations... you'll always be satisfied with the results!

How 'bout some pictures? I'm thinking of building a similar bass so I'd like to see what you do.

Twocargar, sorry for the wait - I've been rather busy with school (not really, just needed a plausible excuse)

Here's some preliminary pictures.

first: the purpleheart fingerboard that I slotted last night for 24 fret/34" scale. I'm not sure if I'll use it on this bass, depends on the other fingerboard.

second: Top - Maple. full inch thick, so I might leave it and not have a separate fingerboard. that's the guitar.
bottom - pretty sure this is hickory. I (sadly) can't recall from when I bought it, but I recall buying it and knowing that it was suitable for necks - wanted to try something new. this one's for the bass.

bottom: Rough-cut body. I did all the cutting with a very old, very large bucksaw (best way to do it, if you ask me.. original bandsaw) and cleaned up with the chisel. The neck pockets' area won't be cut out until the necks are done, so they will be the right size. as they are, they are just sketched to approx. size. What's the fun of certainty?

Tonight, instead of studying biology like I should've, I cleaned the body up the rest of the way. gluing both halves together now, so no pictures tonight. inside lights aren't much good, anyways.

Oh, I also did a half-inch round-over on almost all of it.

new work done:

bass neck pocket routed, halves glued, round-over cleaned up in some places.
note the knot on the bottom horn, on the back.

first neck's profile is cut (by cut, I mean combo attack of table saw, scroll saw and spindle sander. I need a bandsaw)

Holy Crap, another newf! I thought I was alone on here haha.

anyways, the build looks to be going great, and pine is certainly cheap and plentiful in Newfoundland ( and Canada in general).I'm currently doing a slab body p-bass build and the body is 50 year old Canadian pine with a Canadian hard-rock maple neck.
