To Build or to buy...

I want to start my second build. I am thinking about my options, and wanted some opinions on this. Is it ok to buy a neck from warmoth and build everything else. Or should I just get over my fears and build a neck?

Building a neck is far easier than you'd think, especially shaping it, which I was most concerned about and turned out to be rather simple and enjoyable.

The more challenging part is the fretwork, fingerboard and fret installation, leveling, dressing, etc., and basically all of the dimensional details.

I'd say jump in and do it.

As for your original question - is it ok to buy a warmoth neck? I don't think there are any rules about that

Although a lot of people will say it's not that hard to build a neck... I will tell you there is a learning curve. Picking the right woods plus leveling and dressing frets are the key. If you don't care to learn that stuff, don't bother, get a Warmoth. There is no shame in going that route. Just depends on your long term goals and if you someday want to learn how to build a neck. If that's important, why put it off?

Option B: build a bass with a standard neck/heal size so if you fail on the neck you can just buy a Warmoth and bolt it in (Now that sounds like cheating).

Headless,
Have you any reading material? There's always 2 books I refer back to:

Make Your Own Electric Guitar by Melvyn Hiscock

and

Building electric guitars by Martin Koch

Both or either of these books will help tremendously, well that and the right tools

I need to get these books... I have Make Your Own Electric Guitar & Bass by Dennis Waring.

This is a good book but is lacking key information... I will get the other two soon.
