Cleaning maple board

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm in the middle of a refret of an old maple board. The frets were laquered over during production, so the space underneath is unfinished and playing gunk over the past 30 years has accumulated underneath the frets...

What would you all suggest me to use in cleaning it? I realize that in all probability since it's unfinished maple there will probably be some permanent discoloration unless I sand everything down, I just want to de-gunk it.

0000 steel wool and naptha gas should degunk just fine as well as evaporate away very quickly.
Good luck.

Thanks, that was my intended course of action. Just wanted some more solid advice than just what my head tells me to do...

Now, after I've got this cleaned up I'm gonna have to refinish the board so that the space where the older wider frets occupied won't be as visible... I believe it's just nitro laquer on it, if I were to poly over it would there be any adverse reactions?
