clear finish that can be used in high humidity?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, if you saw my other thread you know what I'm dealing with. I am half way done painting my p-bass and can't go any further due to the high humidity that doesn't look like it will go away soon. I've got the new color on using duplicolor acrylic lacquer and a few coats of duplicolor clear lacquer. But now the humidity is hovering over 80% here and I can't spray any more of the clear I have. Is there something else I can use over whats already on there that will let me finish the clear coats and doesn't care about the high humidity?

Right. Don't risk losing what you already have for a quick fix.

Welcome to Ohio!

I usually do all my guitar work in my basement, with the dehumidifier on all the time. I really can't paint in my basement though.

I'd say wait for a while, I don't know if the humidity will clear up, but no need to rush!

Yeah, the humidity inside my house has been around 90% without the AC and I had to shut it off to refinish the woodwork I've been doing. The fast dry varnish I've been using, Benjamin Moore One Hour Clear Gloss, is drying just fine without blushing. It dries almost as fast as lacquer. Dry to the touch in a couple minutes and ready to sand in an hour usually although I like to wait much longer. Inside temperature is about 87 F.

But you're committed now so just be patient. It'd be silly to switch to a different type of top coat now.

Strange to think Ohio has higher humidity than central Florida. I can shoot poly on most days down here. I just have to pick the lowest humidity part of the day to do it.

This is good advice. I work as an industrial painter in Illinois, which has similar climate/humidity to Ohio, and I have to keep track of the temperature and humidity during the day when I'm painting.

In summer, the highest humidity is usually in the morning but it will decrease during the day as the temperature goes up. On a typical summer day, I find that even if the air is saturated with moisture at 9am when the temperature is around 70 F, by about 3pm the temp might be 85-90 F and the humidity could be between 50-70%. Just fine for shooting paint.
