Custom Fret Inlays

Sign in to disble this ad
Since most of you guys here build your own basses, how much work is involved modifying a the inlays on a fret board. I came up with the idea of getting a bass clef and getting that put on the 12th fret of my main bass, making that bass completely mine and orginal. Can you tell me who could do this, how much it would cost and whats involved by doing this?
thanks

well, depending on whether or not youve done any inlaying before it could be quite a challenge, un fortunatly, the only was i can think of to do this is to defret, rout the inlay area, with a very small dremel bit, and insert the inlay, sand flush and refret. it is quite a tedious procedure, and is probably best left to a professional unles you have done inlay work before, and subsequently, refreting

Yep, If I were to do it, I would putt just enough frets for my dremel router base to have enough clearance to cut it. I cut the inlay first, then scribe around it to get the area I need to route away from the wood, route away, glue it in, and sand smooth. Then the partial refret. All in all, I thin the process would take about 3 hours so I would bill it at $210. See what your local repairman says.
