Damaged Jazz pups - need advice?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,
Just moved this from pickups and electronics.

I have a set of Fender original Jazz pups that I bought not more than 3 weeks ago and they have some problems.

First, One of the black wires broke away from the pickup itself. Got bent once too many times or it was weak to begin with. Is it safe to resolder it? It seems pretty simple, re-melt the solder, put the wire back in and bob's your uncle. Is there a danger of overheating the pickup?

second, the copper wire has two places where the wire seems to be broken. Mind this is just a single strand of the copper wire wrapped around the magnets, but might it be possible that it could start to unravel? Is it going to hurt the sound? IMU, it should not hurt the sound if it is broken because there is no current of any sort in the copper. It is a matter of the mass of the copper next to the magnets right? Would it hurt any thing to put a thin spot of super glue (or some related product) over the wires to keep them from unraveling? Is this nothing to worry about?

I will post pics tommorow (my camera is out of batteries tonight) but any advice is appreciated

If the wire is broken the pickup will not work. If you are lucky the wire is broken close to the end of the wind and can just be unraveled 1/2 turn and soldered in to the soldering point. you might want to get it to somebody that can look it over for you...... Good luck...t

The first advice I'd give is not to double post (what you're calling "move") as it's not thought highly of by the moderators.

There's really nothing more to add to the info you've gotten so far otherwise

Won't happen again. I am still getting used to the controls of the forum.

Thanks

No big deal, just so you know in case you didn't. Once it leaves the front page nobody's going to see it anyway so if you haven't gotten a response then nobody can throw stones for trying another forum. Also you can delete any thread you intitiated that nobody has responded to.

You can tack the pup solder points but they tend to take a little more time than say solding to like a pot terminal. I've never damaged a pup in doing so but I haven't had to resolder many and no doubt it can happen.

You can use a meter to see if in deed the winding is broken. If the windings have taken a hit somtimes they will short into one another so that a reduced reading results. If broken you probably will get zip. The best way to know is simply install it. Even if you get a basically normal reading the tone can be effected by damage to the windings.

The wire doesn't go around in complete loops, it's actually just a single strand going around the pickup about 10,000 times. So if it's broken, it unravelling is your last concern - it won't work as intended already.

Thanks everyone. I am going to solder the lead back on tomorrow and see what I got.
