does wenge need filling?

first of all I'm a noob.


That being said, here's my question:

I'm building an EUB with a wenge fingerboard. Now I noticed some minor cracks and gaps ( really really smal). Does this need filling or something? Or do I need to smooth it untill these minor cracks are gone? Or do I just go ahead and finish it with epoxy?

You can leave it as is, fill with CA glue or fill with Epoxy...t

Yeah. Those aren't cracks. THat's the open grain. You can sand all day and never get rid of them. Beautiful, stable wood regardless.

I'd follow tjclem's excellent advice if true-smooth is what you're after. OR, switch to ebony. Talk about close grained. OR, you could do what I did on mine, and use an extremely dense resin (read: plastic) for the fingerboard... v:O)~

ebony! yeah I wish I could find some piece AND affort it! Plus starting with ebony and then screwing it up.....

Oil finish seems to fill the smaller voids fairly well.

You need to figure out what you've really got. "cracks and gaps" are things that tend to widen due to stress. Those must be filled. If you are referring to pores, those do not tend to get deeper or wider. Pores can be left alone or filled if you are after a mirror finish. Any pore filler will do the trick for that or you can do CA glue if you can handle the fumes and sanding dust.

CA all the way. (Cyano Acrylat) put a bit on sandpaper , use huge gloves, and apply gently on wood. that way you dont get it all over on the carpet and the TV remote. what? CA is great.
