drilling for strap buttons/straploks

I have a brand new body from Warmoth and I wanted to know the best way to drill the strap button holes perpendicular to the plane where the button will sit. I am thinking of using the strap button itself glued temporarily to the body as a guide for the drill bit so that I get the proper angle. What do you guys think?

I carefully "eyeball" them, and shoot them by hand. Haven't had any trouble so far(six bodies). Sometimes I have someone else around to help me judge both axes. I use the button to locate and mark where I want the hole (with the drill, lightly).

Yeah, by hand. Make sure you drill for the thickness of the screw *minus* the threads... this will give you a good snug fit, and won't split the wood.

I like to do it by hand too. Also make sure to put tape on the bit to the proper depth. And use a punch to start the drill. Have you thought about flush mounting them? I personally like that look much better and it's not hard to do either. Oh yes another thing is if the hole it tight a little soap on the screw will make it much easier.
