Filling in a pickup cavity

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a P/J bass that im pretty much keeping around for parts. I like the look and sound of a precision bass. since i dont use my jazz pickup anyway, is it possible to fill it in thus making it a pbass? i want it to look like it was never there. im talking filling, painting, refinishing, etc. im not throwing it together.

i kinda wondered but i thought that might lead to intonation problems or something or another.

is it possible? how would i go about doing it?

i think the "best" way would be to make the hole nice and square with a chisel. then find a block of a similar wwood (or any other hardwood really) and make it fit as tight as possible. then glue it in, fill the voids and refinish the bass. then you can re-paint the whole thing. ... or just go on ebay and buy a p-body.

Why not just make a bigger pickup cover that would cover the j bass pickup.

I've built a bass from rough lumber club #2 (I'm pretty sure).

Create a male and female template with 1/2" mdf or similar. The female pattern should be large enough to cover whatever you want to fill and will be used with a top bearing flush trim bit.

The male should fit perfectly into the female (giggity). Cut slightly oversized then sand to perfection. You will then cut a piece slightly oversize then flush trim trim with a router.

If done properly it will require a love tap to fit in. Use the same species for the fill block for obvious reasons.

thats too much chrome for me, plus with the precision style pickguard it would be a tight fit.
