Fingerboard grain orientation...

Hey guys, just wondering how you cut your fretboards- whether you make two long taper cuts, or one, and 2 short ones at the ends, and then have the grain running not parallel to the centreline of the neck...

I glue a significantly larger blank onto a neck blank, and then trim the final profile as an assembled unit.

In cases where I have a fretboard that extends past the neck butt (i.e. a 21-fret board on a 20-fret neck), I shape the neck heel before gluing, and then fine tune the edges of the fretboard by hand after routing the main profile

all the best,

R
