Not a great choice, to be honest. It's not a good bonder, and it tends to shrink over time.
[quote][b] i then sanded the gouge and the surrounding area (where the baby cracks were) some 600 grit sand paper and some #0000 steel wool. since the gouge was on the black portion of the sunburst finish i tried to apply some ebony wood stain to the bare wood. i think the ash must've been cured by Fender though because the stain didn't really stick or absorb even after the sanding.[b][quote]
You were either not down to bare wood there, or you'd effectively sealed the wood by going to 600 grit sandpaper. Sanding to true bare wood at 220 grit would have been fine. Could you smell the wood when you were sanding? I can usually tell when I break through a finish because the dust changes texture and color, and I can suddenly smell raw wood.
Hopefully, what you've done will last. If not, it won't be hard to redo it.
Good luck getting the poly to blend. I've never been satisfied with my own attempts.
