Finish Underneath finish???

I've been sanding down one 5-stringer I've got, it was plain black with a polyurethane finish, and now i've got it sanded, and there's a big difference between the most external layer of wood, and some spots of that which I sanded too much by accident, which look extremely pale. When I moist a bit those pale spots, they turn into a similar color than the rest of the wood, so I assume that the bare wood is finished in some way under the paint... Which finish is that? Is it possible to refinish those spots???

thats most likley sanding sealer, wich is used to seal and level the wood when it is being prepped for finishing. since you have gone through in spots, you will need to rake the entire body down to bare wood for the best results.

well if you are going to leave them there and refinish, you need to seal the body including those spots, because those raw wood spots will soak up whatever finish you apply.

You'll have a tough time trying to touch up those spots. Just clean up the whole surface, and do a brand new coat of whatever finish to get that color you want.
