finishing maple neck with block inlays?

Lots of good info from the search function on finishes for maple, but didn't see an answer to this part of my process. When finishing a previously unfininshed neck with block inlays and binding (like the Geddy Lee or similar Fender 70's era jazz necks), do you just spray over the binding and inlays as well, or is there any consideration to mask them off? Also, I'm assuming after the final coat, finish sould be removed from the frets by sanding or steel wool? Thanks guys!

On the Geddy Lee sig bass blocks aren't inlayed, they are painted.

Oops! My bad! Ok, I'll re-phrase my question to refer to the '70's era jazz necks with the white binding and pearl (or pearloid) inlays.
