Yes it's the plywood template.. the body will be Mahogany for the most part.. didn't decide on the top yet.

Okay, still sanding and filling the template, but it's getting VERY smooth! Every once in a while I get back to it.. feel, sand, fill, sand..

Today, I also ordered the body blank! Two pieces of Honduran Mahogany, measuring 20" x 7" x 1,6". I also found someone who could deliver me a nice piece of flamed maple for the top (1/4"), but I want to see it before I buy it and it's a 2 hour drive, so I have to wait until next week before I have time for that.

Today I bought some nice wood!! A 40 year old Honduras Mahogany body blank and a bookmatched flamed maple top. I had the body blank planed to 40 mm thick with planed sides. Also I bought glue (Titebond).

Mahogany:

Flamed maple:

Together with template:

Glueing the body parts together:

Prolly good in the sense that it's giving you goose bumps. I agree: Goosey.

The last few days I made a lot of progress. Here are some pictures!

I glued the maple together, here it's with the outline on it:

Then I did the rough cut of the top with my jigsaw (although it came out quite nice, so it's not really rough):

... and what a sweet combination of woods!

Today I finished rough cutting the body (also with jigsaw). It was a very slow process but it went very well! (But it's not as nice as the top, so I will have to do some more cutting before I can start routing against the template):

Also I learnt that you can cut maple very clean, but mahogany gives a lot more dust.. and since I wasn't wearing safety wear I now know what mahogany tasts like, how it feels up your nose and that it isn't very pleasant to have in your eyes.

I 'designed' the cavities for hollowing out the body. The one on top gets the cool sound holes and the one at the bottom doubles as cavity for the electronics. Should also get off some weight (not that the mahogany is that heavy, but it isn't very light either).

What do you think? Would this be okay?

Ps.: did you notice that the sound holes are shaped like an 'R' (as a kind of signature) and also a bass clef in a way.. ?

great design, the only part I don't like: why is there the "extension" in the lower horn area, under the neck pocket?
or is it only "spare wood" for routing away after the neck is set in?

No, than it wouldn't be in the design ... it's there because I like it and it helps making the neck pocket less fragile and at the same time allow for a deep cut out shape. But I know it is somewhat unconventional.. I get a lot of remarks about it.. but I think it is going to look great

wow, this one will be sweet!! if when you you cut the soundholes, the wood around them looks a little thick, then router a little thickness from the back before you glue. can't wait to see this one.

I don't see the R but if you see it cool. I was also wondering about the weight. I had an RD artist solid mahogany, that buster was heavy. Looking forward to the sound holes.
