Just completed my first build/defret job. My first bass was an inbanez gsr 200fm nice beginer bass cheap decent sound. I upgraded to an sr500 and recently to an sr 1200. So I had the 200 sitting around and said hey y not lets try to defret it re work it. so I did. I defreted the neck, filled the void with wood filler, and applied a couple layers of black minwax tarnish. I removed the laquer finish on the body and sanded doen some of the body to apply a minor reshape. I also reshaped the head. I applied a clear minwax polyurethane finish and then a couple of coats of automotive clear coat. I kept all the electronics and used new ddairio? flat wounds. One I love the sound almost sounds like a bassy slide guitar. very bluesy tone sounds great IMO. However I am not a wood guy, I'm an electrician by trade so I know hoew to use tools and work with my hands but I now nothing about finishing wood. My clear coat came up clumpy with high spots hear and there. It was my first buil I learned a lot and it was fun. I have a new fretless cheap basss I can just jam on. IMO its was a win/win and I aplaud all of you who can apply a finish top coat lol
