First build, wood choice!

Well, the DIY punk kid in me has got the bass building itch.

I got an SX bass that i'm messing around with, but in the (near) future, i want to start my own bass from the ground up!

I'm an Ecology major, and while i know a good bit about trees in their live state... i do not know much about how they translate into good musical instruments!

Would the wood of (recycled/reclaimed) American Chestnut be viable in making a bass?

I want something representative of where i live (western MD), so if not that, what else?

Thanks! And sorry if it's a dumb question!!

Avoid the worm holes of Chestnut and seek out Jason Rickett.

Check out www.fbbcustom.com. Luthier Matt Schmill has a section on the different woods he uses and some information about each. Hope it helps...
