Like to share the outcome of my first mod.
It's the bass I use for street gigs with my Phil Jones Briefcase (on battery). I need a lightweight bass, because we move around for entire days between different spots where we play.
Original: Dean Edge 4 fretless, active humbuckers, basswood with black stain and a thick layer of highgloss laquer. Truss rod overtight to reach near decent action, causing rumble in the lower positions
Actions:
Neck:
Improved tilt and neck pocket for tightness, straigth neck
Graphite nut
Fingerboard (rosewood) sanded to remove strings traces, treat with citrus oil
Headstock relaquered, Dean brand removed
Body:
gloss laquer sanded off, thin low gloss finish with Danish oil, car polish, carnauba wax
Boston bridge, body flattened to seat it properly
Electronics:
Seymour Duncan passive humbuckers, 4 new pots, added PU selector switch, Gibson Les Paul wiring scheme.
The PU's are smaller; I only painted the inside of the PU holes matte black (why not show it's a mod?)
Strings: TI Jazz Flats
Results:
super low action, easy on the fingers
great massive sound, punch, and above all: super sustain, great fretless growl.
Spent:
Orignal bass (used): $250
Parts: $ 200 |
