First (pre) Build Q - Working and Storing Wood In 2 Places

Sign in to disble this ad
I've had the draw to do my first bass build for a few months and its been fanned tremendously by these forums. I think my first step will be connecting with a local luthier to watch and evaluate if its something I really want to take on.

My question, which could determine whether or not I have the facilities to build, is this: My city (Greenville, SC) has a great woodworkers guild which would give me access to all the tools I need, but I may have to store the woods else where when not working on it. Is that detrimental to the process? There may be provisions for storing 'in-process' work, but I'm not counting on it.

It's a great system for people who don't own their own tools/space: I can join for $75/yr and they have really skilled workers present at all times.

I've got to thank you guys already for the wealth of knowledge that you all share here openly, and for your kind spirits to those of us less experienced. It is a terrific atmosphere - one not often found in forums. Thanks.

Personally I like to keep and store my wood with my tools. I am in the north and find that the temperature extremes seem to really help in the stablilization process. I would imagine in the south your humidity changes might be more extreme. I will leave further comment to someone more familiar with the climate.
But it would be best to keep them at least in similar temperature and humidity if possible.

By the way that's a way cool deal with that woodcrafters guild, not only do you get tools, you get knowledge from experienced woodworkers, man your builds should come out great.
Good luck,
Dirk
