First Project Advice Needed

Sign in to disble this ad
Alright guys,
Im thinking about crafting my own bass out of logs of oak my neighbor said i could have if i go get them out of his yard lol. Well, i personally think oak is an amazing looking wood so im really exicted about makeing this bass. I got a lot of wood so i figured that i would make a simple bass first then once i get better and figure out the little tricks and all that i would gradually excel in complexity.
I think im going to make a standard jazz bass, ill cut the body and router all the cavities and all that but i dont feel like im good enough to make a neck, so i thought i would just buy one.
So, how is oak in sound quality? Im told its a real hard wood that is tough to work with so i got my work cut out for me.
Any advice you can give me would be awesome since im going to wing this whole thing. I have all the equipment i need to make this, my grandpa made a woodshop that has a planer and all that stuff.
Also has anyone have any info on where to buy a good jazz neck. Im dont have much cash to spend on this so price is a concern. Ill keep you guys updated, im going to probably get the wood to size and maybe cut it tuesday.
Thanks

No clue about the sound quality but oak really isn't any harder to cut/sand/route than maple or walnut. For cheap necks, I'd get one from the parts section of www.rondomusic.com. They won't have the same neck pocket size as normal fenders, but they sure are cheap.

Traditionally speaking oak is normally classified as inappropriate for building guitars...
It tends to be a bit too heavy

However more and more oak basses are being successfully built with good results.

The topic of oak as a tonewood has been covered before. A quick search turns up:
Is Oak a good bass wood?

I would just make sure that Oak is dry before gluing it up.... at least 6% !!
