First time bass build. Dying help needed

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all, I'm new here and to building basses in general. For my first build I thought it would be good to buy the body and neck online to familiarize myself with the process.

I ordered an alder jazz bass body with a flame maple top and I planned on dying it green like this bass.

I'm not sure at all what process I would need to do to dye my bass. The reranch article just completely confused me. Here is my bass body.

Thanks in advance for the help guys, much appreciated. <3

To be more specific I was wondering if I needed to put the grain filler then the sand and seal on both the woods or just the alder. Also, if nitrocellulose laquer would be ok to put on an alcohol based dye.

No need to grain fill alder. In most cases, enhancing the grain on flamed maple is to do "dye/sand back" process. That is to use a water based dye on the bare wood, let dry, then sand the surface back to bare wood again. The coloring of the dye will will be left in the flame when finished. Most will use black for this coloring.

Yes, nitro S&S or clear, can be applied over any dyes to lock in the color
