It was good to be a part of the last Builder’s Competition and it looks like the Fretless 5 String Competition is getting off to a good start, but a couple of other builders and I have decided to do things a little differently. We thought that it would be cool to have a competition between two builders; throw a set of ground rules out there and let ‘em go at it. Kind of like those Biker Build Off Competitions, but with a little bit of American Choppers thrown in (it wouldn’t be fun without a little trash talking & chair throwing!).
I will be the Master of Ceremonies (Ring Master?) this time around. This is not about how fast you can build, but instead, we have taken into account that all involved have other builds (among other things) going on as well. This competition’s timeline is six months, which will also allow us to all meet in Nashville for Summer NAMM for the final showdown (July 21st-23rd). The completed basses will be on display at my shop the week before NAMM and everyone is welcome to stop by and check them out. We are hoping to be able to display the basses in downtown Nashville NAMM weekend and that is where we will have the final judging and proclaim the winner. At this time, the prize will consist of internet bragging rights, but between now & July, I am hoping to come up with some kind of trophy that can be proudly displayed and possibly handed over to the winner of the next round… Yes, that’s right; hopefully this will take off and we can have another couple of builders lined up by the time this one ends… Enough talk, time to build some basses.
Welcome to the First Veterans Build-Off Invitational and GTG in Nashville, Tn.
The first build-off will be between Jason Rickett (RickettCustoms) and Mike Wayne (mikeyswood). This will be a competition to build a bass and have you be the judge during the NAMM week in Nashville (July 21st – 23rd).
The specs for this build are as follows:
Jazz shape 5 string
Swamp Ash in the body
Maple in the neck
Hipshot hardware
60's pup position with active electronics
Dark wood fingerboard
All other specs are to the interpretation of the builders which is where the fun comes in. The instruments will be delivered to Nashville the week before NAMM so you have plenty of time to come here to try them out and vote.
Pictures will be taken during the building process, but only posted after the instruments are complete. Trash talking between builders may ensue.
Gentlemen: Start your tablesaws!

I've watched both do builds right here and they both have great attention to detail. This is gonna rock the casbah! Although, I must say that I'm partial to Mike for a few reasons.

You should of seen what was my first request of what was to be built....
Common sense stepped in & it was decided that this first build should be something that would appeal to the masses (Damn common sense!). In reality, I think this is the better way to go; take a popular design & let the builders interpret it in their own way (Damn reality!).
I'm looking forward to seeing what Jason & Mike will come up with...you know it's going to be good.
Stay tuned...

Moonshine | I sure do, as soon as my shipments come in (Ordered last week.) I don't own a lumberyard like Mikey
and BTW, the only beans I'll spill on it, is that it's Bolt on and 34" scale and I hope to have enough scratch left to buy my shell.
That is all.

A: Mass transfer.
Q: What is the difference between a chemist and a chemical engineer?
A: Oh, about $10 K a year.

People will clap when they see Jason's bass; they'll clap their hands over their eyes!
Jason does the work of three men: Larry, Curly, and Moe.
I kid. Stevie Wonder would be happy to see Jason's bass. But he would be happy to see anything.
...and that Chemist/ChemE thing is true.
