Fitting a nut

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all-
Anyone know of the best tools for getting a good right-angle profile for a nut to fit correctly on a bass neck? This is not a fender style nut but one that sits directly at the end of the fretboard and thus needs a good, even right angle to fit correctly. I have a small file set but the square edge is too small to get the entire profile correct. I saw the nut seating files on StewMac.com but they seem to only be for the bottom placement and thus would not be effective in squaring the end of the fretboard at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The square edge of a standard file should be fine.

you could fit two boards together at right angles (or use a mitre box), line both sides with fine sand paper, and work the blank in there to get that much of the profile done.
