Finally a start!

I've got a little bit of a start on this one. Heres the top for this bass. Its basically some black walnut with sapwod that has a bookmatched piece of mineral stained poplar between the sap to get the width needed for a set neck. The pictures here show a little bit of a glue line still but they are going to clean up nicely

Heres the top with the neck blank and fingerboard

To get the body rolling the poplar core comes next, then purpleheart bottom. I'll keep it updated as I go.

Thanks, It took a long time of tinkering with it until I was happy. If you look it kinda looks like a smaller version of the body.

Man, that poplar blends so well with the walnut, it's unreal! The coloring is so close, that if you hadn't said what it was, I might not have been able to tell...

Yeah, that's the first thing I noticed. Hopefully that holds up with the finish on it.

Great work!

Sorry folks, but I've got to close the thread as it's not quite there with CUP.

EDIT: Ignore what I wrote above. I focused on the original post date (more than a month old) and didn't see the initial progress pics are only a few days old. I need more sleep.

My apologies Scott, and thanks for the email.

I did a little body work today.
I found a killer piece of poplar for this body so we decided to use the purple heart as a accent line instead of a back. I got the body glued up, cut and rounded over today. I'll probably start on the neck this weekend to get this one rolling a little more.

Walnut/poplar top wiped down. The purpleheart accent will show nicely when I do the forearm cut and the belly cut.

Poplar bottom, to me this is probably one of the most underrated woods out there for instrument building. I love this particular piece!

Wow, that looks really nice.

There's a 1x6 poplar board at my Home Depot that is solid brown. You'd think it was walnut until you get close to it.

Lol, there is a 2 1/2" strip of poplar in the middle of the walnut top then the purple accent then a 2 piece poplar bottom.

I haven't see many pieces of poplar. All that I have seen are the pics posted here and for what everybody comments poplar is a plain figured wood but this one you have here is just amazing!!!

It really is a plain figured wood. The trick is to find a piece with the natural staining that sets the figure off. Poplar has a lot of mineral stains, the best part is in cabinetry these stains make the wood less desireable. SO most contractors pick through taking only the stain free pieces.

Can you post a pic of the body from its side? Id like to see the contrast of the woods.

NO problem Eleonn, I'll do that after I carve the forearm relief so that it better shows the contrast for you.

Here you go, still a few saw burns in the wood but you get the idea. The purpleheart will darken more.
