Fixing paint chips.

Sign in to disble this ad
My acoustic is covered in little paint dings and chips. It is a plain black, and theres only one coat of paint. Is there an easy way to cover theese patches up without sanding and refinishing the whole guitar.

On one of the chips - try using a black "Sharpie" marker to blacken the chip. If OK - do the rest. It's not a refinish - but then again, that's what you are trying to avoid for now. I did this on my black ray - a chip from my instrument cable tip - it doesn't "fill in" the chip, but it makes it look a whole lot better.

I would avoid that. Sharpie markers are actually very dark purple. They're not black. They look black normally, but when you look it a most angles, it shines purple. Spray paints are usually somewhat lighter than you'd expect them to be, but that would be closer to purple. Some companies make fast drying paint pens too, you know. I used white to give my black pickguard a white outline, so I think you might be able to use that for the chips.

I know there are whole kits made specifically for this kind of thing that work pretty well, but I don't know any of them; someone will post one of them sooner or later.

Nail polish works pretty well. If the chip is not to deep you can fix it. Just add a little at a time and let it dry all the way. I have had great results using clear and black, if possible borrow from sister\mom\wife to further exted cost savings.

Also, pictures are always helpful if you want advice on something.

I accidentally put a ding on the front of my AEB10 Ibanez - yeah it's black.

I tried the old boot camp idea and just used black KIWI shoe polish in it and in a while it built up to fill the dent completely. Even though I know where the damage is - I can't easily find it any more.

That black shoe polish trick works pretty good on Tolex too when it has scuffs and minor dings.
