fixing up Washburn fretless neck

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Washburn T-14 Taurus fretless that needs a bit of work. The fingerboard has some wear, to the point that some areas will buzz when played.
1. What is this 'board made of? Seems like some kind of plastic, not wood...
2. Any advice on smoothing/leveling? Should I just get some fine sandpaper and polish it down?

you'll want to find the correct radius of the FB first, then goto one of the luthier supply houses or ebay to acquire a radiusing block($10) for the correct radius of this instrument. Start with 220, then 320, 400, and 600 if it is wood, if ebonol, start with 400 to 2000 grit bringing it back to level, then begin the set up and touch up.

well if your up to it i suggest replacing your whole finger board with metal i did a test on of my old basses and it sounded pretty strange you get some of the sound of a freted and a fretless you could like sand down the fret board
1/16'' go to lowe's or wear ever and get a piece of steal with dimensions somthing like 3'x3''x1/16'' put a slight bend in it that matches the arch in your fret board and glue it with industial glue tell me what ya think

Never thought of doing an overlay like that... could be interesting.

I really like a mellow sound on my fretless, though. Even what this bass has (ebonol or whatever Washburn used) is not quite as nice as wood. I'll have to try some radius sanding and see how it comes up. I don't know if it would be worth it, but I guess I could try to pop this board off and install a new fingerboard...
