Flame ash?

Sign in to disble this ad
Do you like it? Ever used it? Does it finishes well? Does it smells funny? (lol)
What can you say about a flame ash bass top? How will this improve the sound, considering a mahogany back, 3 piece maple neck and rosewood FB..?

But the rest wont see the flames on the ash, unless you turn your bass, right?
so whats the point in "flame" ash back?

How thick is it? Could you just make the whole thing ash? If not then maybe something like basswood which does not have a lot of figure to it in the back. This way your ash will stand out. (no puns )

Flamed ash is very cool looking, but I've seen it only in northern hard ash...which is about as heavy as granite.

Or lead.

Or granite with lead on top.

Or an anvil.

Heavy man.

It's definitely pretty:

I'm the very fortunate owner of this Wal now, with "olive ash" facings. Evidently this is the heart wood (even denser than normal ash) from ash trees in the UK. Body core is mahogany.

a couple months back I spent an afternoon lifting my way through a stack of rough cut 8/4 Ash to find something lighter than the usual lot of furniture grade Ash. one board in particular was significantly lighter than anything else in the lot, and at 8"+ wide and 10' long it fit the bill.

after I got it home and passed thru the thickness sander I discovered it was beautifully flamed through over 80% of the board the flaming is about 75% of the top shown in whodom's post above

the body blanks are similar in weight to other "Swamp Ash" blanks I have purchased in the past.

I'm liking the figuring and see utilizing it on 2-piece bodies that will not have a pickguard. If this was standard weight Ash (heavy), I'd be inclined to use it for bookmatched tops

all the best,

R

The super leight weight swamp ash on this guitar I made has some nice flame on the bass side of the body.

If you use it as a top and keep it under 0.4 inch it won't affect tone to much..

I hardly ever see flame on swamp ash, but I do see flame on the hard stuff all the time. The flame on swamp ash is usually really wide and not very pronounced over the piece. This piece weighs 1.78 pds. bd/ft.,
