If the poly is the tough kind that's used on most factory basses, then a regular paint stripper won't touch it. I use the gel type sold in gallon cans. The brand I have now contains dychloromethane and methanol-made by Circa 1856 or something like that. It works on most paints and varnishes but won't soften a tough factory finish.
