fret board suggstions?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am building the body out of purpleheart with a thru cherry neck. I'm still debating the frettboard material though I'm in a toss-up b/w bloodwood and cocobolo, but I need others' opinions. I'm leaning toward the bloodwood due to the fact that it won't oxidize darker. Anything else I should consider, pros/cons?

Don't know if your budget allows it, but snakewood is IMO the greatest looking FB wood. The stuff on the left:

HOLY CRAP. that is sweet. bloodwood is great and affodable though, an i think it would pair well with the other wood choices. i am waiting on a piece of sappy bloodwood to bookmatch (or not) that should make great fbs. i like the idea of cherry neck through. also like the purpleheart wings. will it be all purple heart, just a top and back? if it is all purpleheart, will it be chambered to counter the heavy wieght? you sure if you have the tools to work purpleheart? it is extremly hard.

if i were you i would think of the tonal effect just as much as the aesthetic affect...

I do plan to chamber it out b/c I'm quite familiar with its rediculously excessive weight. I also know it is hard, but just out of curiosity what r u refering to tool-wise? I don't know if I have the tools to work it, but mt grandpa has a rather extensive shop and I have little doubt he does.

I plan to make the bass in a Vox phantom body shape.

Pink, is there anything you think I should know about the tonal effect of my choices?

You didn't ask me, but personally, I think the tonal differences between fretboards are both vastly overstated and far less predictable than "tonewood" guys would have you believe. Just buy something that looks good, is stable and easily slotted, and that you can afford, IMO.

You dont need no special tools to work purple, I cut 8/4 on my cheap 110v table saw with a 32t rip blade. No problem. The one thing that purpleheart likes to do is burn... make sure your router bits are sharp, and any other blades for that matter.

Vastly overstated indeed. Good luck

Bloodwood WILL get darker unless you store it the case.
