Fret marking inlays for maple

Any suggestions?
It has to be black, and I'd like to try something different
than the normal plastic rods sold by StewMac..

yeah, thats about all i can think of too. maybe abalone, but its not black

Are you talking about side dots or inlays? For my side dots I use either aluminum, copper, or brass.

I'm talking about side dots.
Lmii also sells black MOP dots, but I think I might have some problems with drilling such a short hole (1.2 mm or so). Very nice though:

Maybe I should give it a try on a piece of wood and see how it looks.
