I have a couple small places on the side of the fretboard that need filled. Any recommendations on what type of filler and techniques to use would be greatly appreciated.
sorry for the crappy pick.

You could remove the finish and spot steam the dents to swell the wood back out (as the wood is still there, just crushed), then refin the area. That sounds like a lot of work for not much benefit IMO.

my 1st idea was to buy some tinted filler at Lowes and give it a go.

And you run the risk of buggering up the neck even more when you try.
It really is not that noticeable. If the edges are bothering your hand try to smooth them over with a little 600 grit sandpaper - but otherwise, if it is just the appearance that's bothering you, this is something you just need to get used to. Like a scar on your hand.
