Question Fretboard height vs. bridge height: help!

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay, this should be a no-brainer, but I haven't come across the info I need.
Is the bottom of your typical metal bass bridge supposed to be on the same plane (at the same height) as the bottom of the fretboard? The top of the fretboard? Some other point of reference? I haven't found any plans with a side view to give me a clue.
Any info would be most welcome.

You wouldn't want your bridge to go any lower *at it's lowest point* than the plane of the top of the frets, and you want plenty of adjustment room to move the action around a bit.

To clarify, he means the point where the string sits with the bridge adjusted all the way down should be slightly above the top of the frets.

As you phrased the question, there's no sure answer, since it depends on the thickness of your fretboard, and the minimum height of the bridge.

It really depends on the way ure bass is built. Just think about it this way: When a string vibrates, where does it vibrate the most? The middle of course. The bridge should be elevated a little bit, but it should curve with the shape of the neck as well. A fingerboard isn't flat across you know. Its rounded slightly. The bridge needs to mimic that to set up a bass nicely.

Draw me a picture!

I really appreciate the explanations, and they make sense, but I'm simply very visually oriented. Can someone illustrate how this would look from the side?
