fretboard/neck making order

i am really congused on the steps involved, and don't want to mess it up. the neck blank is maple and purple heart. right now it is in strips. need to plane them even, and laminate. the fb is flamed maple with with padouk inlays. still need to cut the inlays, route, and install.
okay, so what is the order things need to be done? gluing the neck blank is 1, but what about: gluing fb, to neck, inlaying, radious ing, fretting, fretboard finish, neck finish, neck shaping, and anything else i am forgeting? neck is a bolt on for the record

Man you really need to do your homework and research about the subject.

The order of what you mention can be different from builder to builder. What I would do is: glue laminates neck, make fret slots, inlay, glue the fretboard to the neck, radious, shape the neck, finish fret and finally finish the neck.

Seriously, you need to buy a book or two. You are completely lost and in order to get a big picture view of things you need to read a book cover to cover. Buy Melvyn Hiscock's book as a start. It's an easy read and gives you a good overview of the steps and everything involved. Read it cover to cover about 3 times and then come back and you'll be able to ask educated questions rather than the silly ones that you continue to post.

Seriously....get and read the Hiscock book. You might be able to scare it up for free on interlibrary loan from your nearest library.

It will answer questions you haven't even thought to ask yet.

Truss rod? Upsss... Weeeeell that does between... hummm I guess somewhere between the glued neck and the finishing of the neck

Seriously I just was setting an order to the steps Jordan mention. Obviously there are some steps I didnt mention that the truss rod or the bending or fret work after fretting.

Jordan,

Pore filling is one of the steps of the finishing procedure. There is no point to apply it as the final step. You have to do it first usually, buthere again there are some things that changes from builder to builder depending in what kind of look they want. Again... you really need to do some research and have at least a little idea of what you want and how to accomplish before post questions.

+infinity

steps to build a neck:

1) get the book and meditatively read it cover to cover at least three times

2) purchase some very inexpensive materials from Home Depot (or other)

3) follow the steps for making a neck as detailed in Hiscock's book

4) go back and re-read the book and experience the "Ah-ha!!" syndrome of now getting much of what he was detailing

5) purchase another set of inexpensive materials

6) build this next neck so that it's dimensionally sound and can actually be played

7) now you're getting ready to use the real materials for a real neck

BTW - the exact order of the steps I take vary slightly from what someone else might do. some of this is based on the tools I have and use, and some of it is purely personal preference. while getting an order of events from many different builders is good for initial learning, it is only by making several necks that you will discover what works best for you so that you can achieve a consistently high quality and decidedly accurate end product

all the best,

R
