Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all

I'm building a bass right now that will have a purple heart top, ash middle and mahogany back... i'm looking for a fretboard wood that would compliment the purpleheart.
thanks

with purpleheart being so middle of the road,(colored) I would say Mac Ebony, Birdseye Maple, tulipwood, Gaboon Ebony, Wenge makes me balk as PH browns with age, and it might mute the wenge after a year or two. Goncalo Alves might be good too.

the bass is a single cut, i think it will be too purple with a purpleheart fretboard. i have a bass with ebony and one with rosewood and one with birdseye.

I've been thinking of tulipwood. I prefer lighter coloured woods. for the fretboards, or something realy grainy. i was thining of brazilian parajou (sp?) because i have extra flooring material of it, but its a bit orange, not sure it thats the route i want to take.

any more opinions

I know it's hard to tell from the photo, but here's an example of a purpleheart neck, ebony board, walnut body. I think the colors look great together. Sounds good too

Come to think of it...
What about pink ivory..
You have to be zulu royalty though...if you want to live..
And you might look a lil gay on stage with your purple/pink bass , but I think I wood be willing to take that risk.

Grains don't match and they will both go to brown over time.

Purpleheart tends to darken with time. So maple is out. Unless you really like the contrast, bubinga is probably too orange-y. Wenge and Zebrawood can really start getting to fingers, even if buffed really well, due to the coarseness of the quartersawn grain. On this bass, rosewood would just be too, well, pedestrian.

Either Mac ebony or Gabon ebony. Nothing beats a classic looking board. I prefer the feel of Mac ebony, and feel it is a better wood for bass, since to my ears it has a slightly softer top end.
