Fretted to fretless: New board or new neck?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all, (this has probably been covered, but searching the threads wasn't turning up anyhting for me.)

I want a fretless bass, but I am left handed. Nobody seems to think that left handed players deserve a fretless bass unless they can shell out $1500+. This means that since I'm not willing to prostitute myself, I can't afford to buy one, or have one made.

The solution: Buy me a regular lefty and modify my way to freedom. (I have in mind a used MIM Jazz bass, with rosewood fretboard.)

The question: I don't want a rosewood borard if it is a fretless, so, in your opinion, would I be better off having a luthier replace the fretboard with a nice ebony board, or just say, "The hell with it," and put a whole new neck on it?

Either way, Fender will disown the thing. I'm concernded about matters of structure and tone.
