Gibson Guitar’s Newest CNC Machine Strikes A Productive Chord

this was simply too cool not to mention here

"Gibson has taken its CNC use a step further with a three-axis automatic bandsaw that helps keep its guitar factory humming"

http://www.designnews.com/article/CA...t=gibson#_self

I'm sure a few people who build with as few power tools as possible will poo poo this, but for those who appreciate all that CNC can offer this is a pretty cool new tool that Gibson just deployed

all the best,

R

My buddy is a tool and dye maker CNC guru and we have these discussions often,

CNC is an incredible tool, and you can get creative with that process it just is far beyond the reach of many woodworkers and there is something really satisfying in using a handplane.

cool!

I only have one question...

if you're using something like that for cutting stacks of bodies or necks, what does the 3rd axis get you?

3rd axis is not vertical (z-axis). It is the rotation angle (theta) of the blade.

it does sound neat. though a part of my brain went "nooooo" when I heard it, maybe the consistency will get better (because Gibsons have gone down in quality alot lately, so this should help with that. it's just that more more and is done with machines it makes me think that Gibsons will lose that specialness they have...

My only problem is that this will bring costs down for Gibson a lot I assume (Although it will probably up consistency, don't get me wrong), but even though the price will go down for their costs, their price will be the same.

So, they have an increase in productivity, an increase in quality, a decrease in cost and an increase in profits. How is this bad for the consumer or the business?
