Question Is it a good idea to throw a packet of Silica Gel into my hrd case?

I live at the beach in a humid tropical climate. But sometimes it doesn't rain for weeks or months and gets real dry.

When it gets humid buzzes sometimes "appear" on my neck that weren't there before. (I have it set up with a very low action, I always play with a light touch).

Should I throw silica gel into my hard case when it gets steamy?

Difficult to say. Silica gel packets will keep it dry, but only if you replace them often.
I guess you should ask yourself which type of weather do you have most often-dry or humid? Then, do what you can to keep the bass's 'environment' matching the most common weather condition, as often as possible.
For example I live in the Northeast US. The weather here is humid, or somewhat humid, approximately half the year, so for me it's a toss-up. I keep the air conditioning on in summer, and a humidifier on in winter, to keep my studio at around 35-40% humidity.
This way the basses are always playable, and don't change enough during travel to worry about.

Hi.

The problem I've found with silica gel bags is that they're won't last long and are rather expensive to use. My photographing friends have to use them constantly and there was a tip on a photog site ages ago. Crystaline cat-litter is the same stuff, You just need to bag it.

What I would do is to find a hermetic storing cabinet or a case. I have water-tight PELI ( http://www.peli.com/ ) travel case that is not long enough for instruments, but I'm sure they have ones for instruments too. WILL cost You an arm and a leg and your left testicle, but that will be the last case you'll ever need to buy .
Iron Maiden uses them so those must be good .

Regards
Sam
