Gun Oil Tint On NC Maple Neck

I have a Fender highway one with a maple neck and rosewood board. I want to have a "gun oil tint" finsih on the neck, similar to the G&L necks, a rather dark amber kinda color. I know the body is nitrocellulose and I THINK the neck is too. Is there anything I can rub on over the finish to get the effect? I don't mind sanding but I doubt I would get all the old finish off due to porosity of the wood,and from reading other threads it seems imperative to get it all off if you wanna use a stain rather than a top coat. If spraying is the only or best way to go does anyone recommend a luthier In northern Illinois? I can find plenty of "techs" but yet to find a real luthier, also can I take the neck off and have it shipped to a luthier?

You can do it with Tru-Oil, but it will take something like 20 - 30 coats. You can apply it right over a poly finish, which is likely what you have on that neck.

Wipe on a *thin* coat with the softest paper towel you can find, then IMMEDIATELY wipe it back off with a clean sheet. That's sticky stuff, so wear latex gloves, and be sure you mask off the fingerboard, as you don't want to get that stuff on it... it won't look right on there at all.

thanks for the reply. can I use use thin rags? I have access to tons of rags I can get free that are about as thick as 2-3 layers of gauze/cheesecloth. Also when I wipe it off, just curious, what keeps any on the neck, even though it has a finish will it still absorb more? Whatever it is it's looks very thin and satiny not thick like varnish. I tried to find out what they put on the highway ones but all i found was that they use nitrocellulose on the bodies.

I just found the answer on the neck finish. It is satin polurethane finish. So will the tru-oil soak in the existing finish or just lay on top?

Perfect. Tru-oil is compatible with polly. Ruff it up and apply over top. Look to see if you can get the spray on tru-oil. The more coats the darker it will be.
