how exactly should I finish my bass?

this is my fourth instrument project so far, following a strat and two ukuleles. I've got a jazz-style neck with a maple neck and rosewood fingerboard and some really cool snake-shaped mother-of-pearl inlays (one on the fretboard, and one on the headstock which is covered by a rosewood veneer), and I'm going to be making an alder jazz-shaped body, with a homemade pickguard, probably out of sheet-metal. There will ber a p-bass pickup with a volume knob. I'd like to finish the body in black, and give it a worn-down relic look, so I'm just wondering, what finish exactly should I use for this bass? I'm thinking of some kind of epoxy base-coat (to go under the wood and protect the areas where I've sanded finish off) with some kind of laquer/poly topcoat, but I've really got no idea how (or even if) this would work, any suggestions? it has to be cheap, simple, and can't require much in the way of specialized equipment, I'm working with a basic shop here.

thanks in advance for your time.

I'm thinking lacquer.
